A wonderful two-color traditional monogram style! The vines behind each letter are different. Try sewing the vine pattern with variegated thread for a softer antique quality. Simplify the look by skipping the first color or use the vines without the letters as embellishments around buttonholes, etc.

Hot Iron Transfer Patterns were first made in 1879, and continued to be popular with hand embroiderers until the mid-1950s. A vast array of subject matter was covered, and the artwork was designed to be transferred as line art to fabric. These monogram designs were available in the 1930s. We have digitized separate colors for each portion of the design, but this would also looks stunning done white-on-white for a wedding gift. The letters are raised satin stitch, and the display border with decorative bow is done in satin stitch, accented with French knots.

The flowing swirls of this classic monogram style are done in satin stitch with ample underlay to create a rounded look. The letters in this single-initial monogram style are framed by an arc on either side, done in two colors. Within the satin stitch border are areas of seed stitch, which add a luxurious texture as a counterpoint to the satin stitching. The letters can be used without the border by stopping your machine after the first color, or deleting the brackets in your embroidery software program.

Another monogram style influenced by the English Arts and Crafts movement. The artwork is from 1935. Designed as a single-letter monogram, each letter is presented with a five color flower - a stylized blue aster. The flower is made from satin and bean stitches, the flower petals outlined with bean stitches. The letters themselves are done in a curved block style, with a second color as a shadow or highlight, depending on the thread color used. The letters or the flower can each be easily used alone.

Inspired by a 1940s vintage monogrammed hankie in our Monogram Museum collection, this elaborate style includes several digitizing techniques based on handwork. There are small oval seed stitch fill patterns, bordered by satin stitch edges and leaf details. Short sections of chain stitch create an overall oval border, finished with satin stitch flowers at the top and bottom. The monogram letters are digitized with several underlay layers to create extra lift for the satin stitches, and several small split columns create depressions, as often seen in finely crafted hand embroidery.

This monogram style was inspired by a vintage embroidered monogram from our extensive collection. The original is all one color - white-on-white - and this style will look elegant sewn that way. In order to add some additional design flexibility we have digitized color breaks for the different elements of the garland so that a complex palette of spring colors can be used. All of the elements are satin stitch. As with others of this type, you can sew the garland alone by stopping before the initial is sewn, or sew just the initial alone by skipping past the colors in the garland.
