A wonderful two-color traditional monogram style! The vines behind each letter are different. Try sewing the vine pattern with variegated thread for a softer antique quality. Simplify the look by skipping the first color or use the vines without the letters as embellishments around buttonholes, etc.

This style is featured in "Hobknobbing" by Betsy Dubicki, Creative Machine Embroidery magazine, May/June 2003.

Hot Iron Transfer Patterns were first made in 1879, and continued to be popular with hand embroiderers until the mid-1950s. A vast array of subject matter was covered, and the artwork was designed to be transferred as line art to fabric. These monogram designs were available in the 1930s. We have digitized separate colors for each portion of the design, but this would also looks stunning done white-on-white for a wedding gift. The letters are raised satin stitch, and the display border with decorative bow is done in satin stitch, accented with French knots.

This style is featured in A Table of Gold by Susan Schrempf, Designs in Machine Embroidery magazine, January/Fenruary 2007.

This elegant monogram style, digitized from artwork from 1925, is influenced by the English Arts and Crafts movement. Unlike the architectural simplicity of the American Arts & Crafts movement, the English style features more flowers and flourishes. This five-color design features a chainstitch vine detail, a graceful satin stitch letter, and a three-color flower.

Another monogram style influenced by the English Arts and Crafts movement. The artwork is from 1935. Designed as a single-letter monogram, each letter is presented with a five color flower - a stylized blue aster. The flower is made from satin and bean stitches, the flower petals outlined with bean stitches. The letters themselves are done in a curved block style, with a second color as a shadow or highlight, depending on the thread color used. The letters or the flower can each be easily used alone.

These satin stitch monogram letters have a modern flow and a dynamic uphill slant. The right side letters are embellished with a stylized branch motif that curls back under the letter, and is done in a combination of satin stitch and chain stitch. Each letter can be used independently, and the branch can be eliminated by stopping the machine after the first color, so this style is very versatile. Digitized from artwork from the 1930s.

The artwork for several of the letters in this monogram set came to us from the catalogue of a 1940s commercial monogram shop - we imagined and recreated the rest. Make two or three-letter combinations from larger and smaller scale satin stitch letters on top of the lily-of-the-valley background design - the combinations created can be sewn with one or two thread colors.

This is another French monogram style, this time from 1923. It has delicate satin stitch details, and would look great on linens, handkerchiefs, etc. The left side letters (A-Z) are one color. The right side letters (A-Z) are four colors - each letter includes a three color flower accent. This style would look equally elegant if sewn tone-on-tone, all one color. The letters are designed to be merged in left and right versions to create a diamond from the letters that you choose.

This monogram style is English, dating from about 1900. There is a very delicate vine and leaf pattern in the background, composed of thin satin stitches and bean stitches, along with two-color satin stitch flowers. The letters are a serif block style, done in satin stitch fill with a thin outline detail. The overall motif creates a square. The letters can be used alone if you wish by skipping past the background. This is a five color design, but it looks equally special sewn in all one color.

Inspired by a 1940s vintage monogrammed hankie in our Monogram Museum collection, this elaborate style includes several digitizing techniques based on handwork. There are small oval seed stitch fill patterns, bordered by satin stitch edges and leaf details. Short sections of chain stitch create an overall oval border, finished with satin stitch flowers at the top and bottom. The monogram letters are digitized with several underlay layers to create extra lift for the satin stitches, and several small split columns create depressions, as often seen in finely crafted hand embroidery.

Digitizing this monogram style is the subject of "Hand Embroidery by Machine" Threads Magazine, July 2004.

This monogram style was inspired by a vintage embroidered monogram from our extensive collection. The original is all one color - white-on-white - and this style will look elegant sewn that way. In order to add some additional design flexibility we have digitized color breaks for the different elements of the garland so that a complex palette of spring colors can be used. All of the elements are satin stitch. As with others of this type, you can sew the garland alone by stopping before the initial is sewn, or sew just the initial alone by skipping past the colors in the garland.
