Thread Conservation

Embroidery thread can be used for 10 years or more if it is properly stored. Keep the thread away from sunlight, and don't allow it to get too dry. Many embroiderers store thread in zip-lock bags.

Feedback or Questions about "Thread Conservation" (1)

Does the quality of machine embroidery thread differ depending where it is bought? In other words is WalMart thread as good as any other.

EmbroideryArts Support answers:

The most important issue with thread for embroidery machines is the age of the thread - the older the thread is, the more brittle it will become, even if it has been stored in climate-controlled conditions. Since thread isn't dated like milk, finding our its age is very difficult.

Large mass-market stores can afford to buy in quantity, which typically means that some savings is passed on to the consumer. If large batches of thread aren't sold quickly, they can sit around awhile. However, small suppliers who don't sell much tread could have their stock even longer.

Thread is the least expensive element in machine embroidery, so trying to find a reliable source for recently manufactured thread is more important than its price.
