Directions for Monogrammed Classic Baby Cap/April 2002

(This project utilizes letters from our Avant Garde Monogram Set 3.

Step 1. Print the instructions.

These are .pdf files, and require Adobe Acrobat Reader software in order to view and print.
To insure printing in exact size, be sure that FIT TO PAGE (see Properties under the Print Menu) is not selected.

Step 2. Review instructions and materials required (materials list at the end of these instructions).

Step 3. Merge Designs.

Choose the combination of letters that you want to work with by merging them within your software, and combine them with the v-shaped border that is part of this set.. When you are happy with the results save the combination under a new filename of your choice.

Step 4. Embroider the monogram.

The edge of this cap is designed to be turned up when worn, and the monogram will be placed on the turned-up area. The design is sewn right-side-up.

Turn the cap inside out, and hoop the cap so that the edge of the cap is straight in the hoop, and is approximately 3/4" (20mm) from the top of the hoop area. The peak of the cap should be at the bottom of the hoop.

We used two layers of lightweight cutaway backing as a stabilizer.

Carefully stretch the cap in the hoop so that there is minimal slack in the fabric.

The top of the monogram should be approximately 1/4" (5mm) down from the edge of the cap, and centered in the hoop.

(Hint: for precise placement, sew a sample first and then make a photocopy of the sample. Determine the exact center of the design by measuring the design width, then the design height. Mark this spot with a pencil, then use a hole punch to create a hole at the center point. Use this template to locate the exact center of the design, then position the needle of the machine directly over this spot.)

Carefully trim the stabilizer following embroidery, and turn the flap of the hat up.

Congratulations! Your project is complete.
