Directions for a Monogrammed Gusset Tote Bag/ February 2003
(This project utilizes
letters from our Avant Garde Monogram
Set 4.)
Step 1. Print the instructions.
These are .pdf files,
and require Adobe Acrobat Reader software in order to view and print.
To insure printing in exact size, be sure that FIT TO PAGE (see Properties
under the Print Menu) is not selected.
Step 2.Review instructions and materials required (materials
list at the end of these instructions).
Step 3.Merge Designs to create Monogram.
The Avant Garde
Monogram Set 4 consists of 52 designs (A-Z in two versions). 26 designs
are two
colors - the first color is an oval border, and the second color is a
fluid upper-case letter, placed at the
lower portion of the oval, with an open space above.
26 additional designs
are one color - a compatible letter style which will fit within the open
upper space. When combined,
two letters create a vertical monogram.
In order to add interest
to this project, we also isolated the oval shape within our embroidery
software
program, tilted it at a 30 degree angle, then mirrored the oval by
creating a copy flipped over. These two
accents were then reduced approximately 20%, and placed on either side
of the two letter monogram
combination.
Once you are happy with the placement of the various parts, save the design
under a new filename.
Step 4. Embroider the monogram and accents.
The gusset totebag
used for this project is made of a medium-weight canvas. Our example
is Natural, but
the totebag also comes in Black, Navy, Red, and Royal Blue.
We decided to sew
the accent designs on either side of the monogram in a neutral tone,
just slightly darker
than the color of the canvas. This subtle touch creates additional
emphasis on the monogram. The accents
are still quite visible - the satin stitch shimmers in the light.
Choose a hoop large
enough to accommodate the complete design, then hoop the bag along with
one layer
of medium-weight tearaway stabilizer.
Remove the stabilizer
after the design has been embroidered.
We put our design on only one side of the bag, centered on the midpoint
of the top edge of the bag, 2 1/2"
(65mm) down from the edge. If you wish to have the monogram on
each side, rehoop the bag and repeat
the embroidery.
Congratulations!
Your project is complete.
