Directions for Sachet Project / February 2000
This project uses letters
from Victorian Monogram Set 1.
Step 1. Print the instructions.
These are .pdf files, and require
Adobe Acrobat Reader software in order to view and print.
To insure printing in exact size, be sure that FIT
TO PAGE (see Properties under the Print Menu) is not selected.
Step 2. Download free design.
This is a self-extracting zip
file (.exe). The file is called Bag01.exe.

Save
the file format that you need, and discard the rest.
Import the bag into your design
software.
Step 3. Merge the sachet bag design and letter from the
Monogram Set of your choice.
The sachet bag design is ideal for merging with
a letter from one of our monogram sets. This project, given the size of the
bag design, is best carried out with our smaller size letters.
Choose one letter (typically the letter first letter
of a surname), and move it as required until you are happy with the overall
design. (Note: for more information on how to import and merge designs together,
consult your embroidery design software Help files.)
When you are happy with the overall design, save the
file with a filename of your choice.
Step 4. Sew out the bag design.
The completed project requires two sewn elements,
which are identical except that one side will have the monogram letter, while
the back is blank. You will sew out one side plain, and one side with a monogram
design, utilizing the same basic embroidery file.
A. Place one layer
of "Craftmistress" (see materials sources below) in the embroidery hoop,
drum tight. Load the bottom bobbin with the same color thread, or choose
a light thread color that isnít too much of a contrast with white bobbin
thread. We used a pale yellow (Madeira 1123) for the body of the bag.
This is a two-color design, and you may choose
to sew both parts of the design (bag body, top border and eyelets) as a single
color, or do the embellishments in a second color - we used a light blue (Madeira
1227).
Note: Craftmistress produces two products
that are both suitable for this project. "Romeo" is a heavy-weight
water-soluble stabilizer (one layer required), and "Guliette" is
a lighter weight version (two layers required).
B. Using a pair of sharp-tipped embroidery scissors,
remove the excess "Craftmistress" stabilizer from the embroideries
by cutting close to the thread, but being very careful not to snip away any
stitches.
C. Cut away the jump stitches between the eyelet
stitches. Carefully cut away the thread in the middle of the satin stitch
circles, again being very careful not to snip any of the satin stitches.
D. Using a running stitch on your sewing machine
(or stitching by hand), join the two halves of the bag together, face to face,
stitching close to the edge.
E. Dissolve away the "Craftmistress"
stabilizer by holding the bag under cold running water. For best results,
follow this by soaking the bag in warm water for several hours. This will
ensure that the finished product feels soft.
F. Leave to dry flat.
G. Turn the bag right side out.
H. Thread a piece of 1/4" (6mm) ribbon through
the holes and tie a bow at the front.
Congratulations! Your project is complete.
If you are using this project as a sachet, fill the
bag with your favorite potpourri
