Directions for Monogrammed Hemstitched Napkins/May 2002

(This project utilizes letters from our Diamond Monogram Set 2.

Step 1. Print the instructions.

These are .pdf files, and require Adobe Acrobat Reader software in order to view and print.
To insure printing in exact size, be sure that FIT TO PAGE (see Properties under the Print Menu) is not selected.

Step 2. Review instructions and materials required (materials list at the end of these instructions).

Step 3. Create a monogram.

We used two letters from the Diamond Monogram Set 2. The set consists of 26 left side letters and 26 right side letter.

Choose the appropriate letters and create a two-letter monogram by merging the left and right side letters of your choice together, then save the combination under a new filename after you are satisfied with the spacing

Step 4. Hoop the napkin.

The Diamond Monogram Set 2 lends itself to placing the monogram in the corner of the napkin. Exact placement and alignment of the monogram are critical to the success of this project.

For our example we chose brighter colors. This monogram would be equally appropriate if it were sewn white-on-white.

In order to simplify the placement process, first sew out your monogram on scrap fabric, then make a full-size photocopy of the result.

With a ruler and a pencil, locate the exact center of design, then cut a small square hole in the paper with an x-acto knife. This hole will enable you to mark the design center on the napkin. Trim the photocopy close to the edges of the design on all sides.

Carefully align the photocopy with the hemstitched details in the corner of the napkin, placed so that each edge of the design is inset 1/2î (13mm) from the hemstitched border. Using the hole in the photocopy, mark the center of the design with an air-soluble marker.

Place your hoop on a flat table surface so that it is perfectly square to the edge of the table. Measure as required to insure that the hoop isnít out of square alignment.

Fold the napkin in half, front sides folded in, forming a triangle, with the point facing toward you. Carefully position the napkin over the hoop, insuring that the long straight side of the folded napkin is also perfectly square to the edge of the table.

Carefully slip a sheet of medium weight tear-away backing between the hoop and the napkin, then insert the upper half of the hoop, locking the two halves together. Unfold the napkin, so that the excess is at the top.

Step 5. Embroider the monogram.

Put the hoop on the machine, and insure that the needle is positioned directly over the mark for the design center.

Embroider the monogram, then carefully remove the tear-away stabilizer with tweezers.

Congratulations! Your project is complete.
