Directions for Monogrammed Battenberg Lace Apron Project / June 2001

This project utilizes letters from our Candlewick Monogram Set.

The Candlewick Monogram Set was developed in collaboration with Susan Schrempf and Gail Tibbetts.

Susan is an embellishment artist whose primary focus is on machine arts. She has taught her techniques through workshops in sewing shops and guilds throughout the US. She is the author and publisher of "Simple Ribbon Artistry by Machine". Susan can be contacted at victorianventure@qwest.net.

Gail is a designer and digitizer who has worked extensively with Bernina Artista software. For more information, please visit http://www.sewingplace.com

A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this style are being donated to the Susan G.Komen Breast Cancer Foundation/ Search for the Cure.

Step 1. Print the illustrations and instructions.

These are .pdf files, and require Adobe Acrobat Reader software in order to view and print.
To insure printing in exact size, be sure that FIT TO PAGE (see Properties under the Print Menu) is not selected.

Step 2. . Review instructions and materials required (materials list at the end of these instructions).

Step 3. Choose a monogram

Because of the available embroidery area in the apron panel, and the size of the letters, we have used a single letter monogram for this project. Either a first or last initial is appropriate, depending on your preference.

Step 4. . Embroider the monogram.

The placement of the monogram in our illustration is midway between the top of the panel seam and the embroidered detail already sewn on the apron.

We chose traditional colors - a wine red for the candlewick details, a gray-green for the letter itself. Other choices are appropriate, and white on white would also be traditional.

We used medium weight tear-away stabilizer in order to provide a clean backside to the embroidery after it is sewn. After sewing, the tear-away stabilizer was carefully picked out of the interior of the embroidery with tweezers.

Congratulations! Your project is complete.
